RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN

STEM to STEAM

A briefing marking Rhode Island’s commitment to fostering innovation through the addition of Art and Design to STEM education and research.

Please contact your state representatives and ask them to co-sponsor H.Res 319 if you believe, like we do, that art + science = innovation:

STEAM represents the economic progress and breakthrough innovation that comes from adding art and design to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education and research: STEM + Art = STEAM. The value of art and design to innovation is clear: Artists and designers humanize technology, making it understandable and capable of bringing about societal change. The tools and methods of a studio-based education offer new models for creative problem solving, flexible thinking and risk-taking that are needed in today’s complex and dynamic world. The STEM to STEAM Briefing was presented in cooperation with Congressman Jim Langevin (RI-2), the Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council, the Rhode Island Foundation, Rhode Island College, and the Rhode Island Department of Education.

Rhode Island has taken a leadership role in enacting policies and collaborations that recognize the pivotal role of art and design in building STEAM. Come hear about these efforts, including RISD-led initiatives that will demonstrate how this synergy offers the potential to promote education and workforce development, and advance statewide innovation.
